Tranquil hill-stations around Pune

Pune is the second largest city in Maharashtra and the cultural capital of the state. It is also an important business and educational hub. It was once the center of power of the Maratha Empire under ShivajiMaharaj.

Lonavala:  Located at a distance of 67 km from Pune, Lonavala is one of the most popular hill stations perched at an altitude of 622 m. The name of hill station is derived from the Sanskrit word “Lonavali” which means the group of caves. Lord Elphinstone, a Britisher, developed Lonavala  as a resort town in the year 1871. Lonavala is famous for its valleys, forts, lakes, waterfalls and caves.

Most visited places in Lonavala are Lohagad Fort, Rajmachi Point, Lonavala Lake, Tiger's Leap, Bhaja Caves,  Karla Caves, Rajmachi Fort, Bhushi Dam, Visapur Fort, Bedsa Caves and Tung Fort. Mahabaleshwar: Located at an altitude of 1353 m, Mahabaleshwar is a peaceful hill station in Satara district of Maharashtra. It is amongst the popular weekend destinations from Pune and Mumbai. Due to its decent altitude it offers wonderful views of the plains and surrounding greenery.

PanchGana temple in Mahabaleshwar is said to be the source of the Krishna River that flows across Maharashtra and others states. Mahabaleshwar attracts large number of of tourists for its lovely views, green landscapes and pleasant weather.

Panchgani: It is situated close to Mahabaleshwar and is nestled within five hills of Sahyadri range. The town carries the old world charm and you will find many British style old bungalows and Parsi villas.  It has also developed as a prominent health resort.

Situated at a height of 1334 m, Panchgani is visited by tourists looking for less crowded hill station than Lonavala and Mahabaleshwar. The town has many beautiful tourist attractions including Table Land, Kamalgadh Fort, Parsi point, Rajpuri Caves, Sydney Point, Mapro Gardens, Dhom dam etc.

Matheran:  Located at a distance of 122 km from Pune, Matheran is a small hill station in Raigad district of Maharashtra. It is one of the best monsoon destinations in Maharashtra. Matheran is declared as an eco-sensitive region by the Ministry of Environment and Forest and it is Asia's only automobile-free hill station. 

Private vehicles are allowed up to Dasturi Point, 2.5 km away from Matheran and you can reach the town by foot or by taking a pony. Matheran has more than 30 viewpoints which provide panoramic view of the hills of Western Ghats. The town also offers adventurous activities such as trekking, hiking, climbing, etc.

Bhimashankar: It is a holistic place for tourism as you will get trekking options, adventure sports, wildlife and pilgrimage in and around the town.  It has become a much sought after place for adventure enthusiasts, nature lovers and pilgrims. Located at just 110 kms from Pune, it can be reached in 3 hours via Pune to Bhimashankar cabs.
