Ginkgo Biloba Interactions, Warnings and Contraindications

When it comes to enhancing memory Ginkgo Biloba supplement is the best choice. It is also effective in enhancing concentration and for brain cells it can act as a neuro-protectant. Earlier it was mainly used as a cure-all remedy. It helps in promoting energy, protect the body against infections, and reduce the pain, alleviate asthma, and can enhance libido. Since Ginkgo Biloba contains flavonoids, bilobalodes, and ginkgolides it is very effective in improving blood flow to the brain and even to improve the cardiovascular health. 

Ginkgo biloba is generally considered as a safe for use. But there are few conditions in which use of this supplement should be avoided. In some health condition and with certain drugs, there is chance that Ginkgo Biloba may interact. It is better to consult the physician before starting the dosage of this supplement. 


Ginkgo Biloba is a tree and it is listed under earth’s great survivors. It was present even in prehistoric period when there were dinosaurs on earth. The Ginkgo tree has a life span of over 3000 years. From the lower branches of the tree there will be a growth which looks like living stalactites known as chichi. Even when the ginkgo tree is very old, this growth will still be there. 

Chichi grows towards the ground vertically. They lead to new roots when they reach the ground and that results in new trees. Ginkgo has its own place in folk medicine and it is in use from thousands of years. Since it has many properties which help both mental and health functions, it has been revered in east. The reason behind its benefits is it is a great antioxidant and it can work as a circulation booster in brain. it is very effective in treating mood disorders because it has the ability to inhibit MAO enzymes. 

Even though Ginkgo is in use as a medicine from thousands of years one should be very cautious in using it. This is because there is a risk that it can interact with certain medications. 

Contraindications and interactions:

Ginkgo Biloba supplements may get contraindicated if used along with traditional supplements, OTC preparations, and few prescription medications as well. Some of the medications with which it can get contraindicated are
  • Ibuvrofen
  • Fluoxetine
  • Buspirone
  • Alprazolam
  • Medications used in treating depression like zolotoft, Anafranil, paxil, and Tofranil.
  • Diabetic medications or antidiabetes drugs like insulin, Micronase, Diabeta, Amaryl, and Actos.
  • Certain medicines that enhance the chance of having seizure
  • Blood clotting reducing medications like aspirin, ticlid, and heparin.
  • Preventing seizues medications like dilantin, Neurontin, Mysoline. These are also knwn as anticonvulsants
It is not true that combination of any of these drugs with Ginkgo biloba will result in side effects. There are chances that Ginkgo biloba may either decrease or increase the effectiveness of these medications. It can interact with some medications.

The medications like Cytochrome p450 which will get broken down in liver have the chances of contraindications when combined with Ginkgo Biloba. Patients who are already prescribed with Talinolol and Efavirenz which is prescribed for HIV infections should consult doctor before they start taking Ginkgo Biloba supplements.
